It became necessary to expand the airport's terminal when the need arose at Kuusamo to simultaneously handle air traffic within and outside the Schengen area.
During the first phase of the project, the departing passenger side became operational. "We forecast that the expansion of the facilities for arriving passengers will become operational in March 2009, and the old section will be renovated completely during May-October 2009," says Ari Salmenkorva, Airport Manager of Kuusamo Airport.
The old and new sections are linked by a connecting gallery. The opened expansion has a surface area of 3,500 square metres. The airport will have a total surface area of 6,500 square metres.
"The check-in area has been improved significantly - the passenger areas were expanded and the passenger movement routes were made clearer," says Project Manager Seppo Sakaranaho.
The new section has modern luggage handling and security check areas and the equipment and devices are in accordance with modern requirements. The restaurant will remain at its current location; it can be reached through the security check.
As a part of the renovation, the airport's heating system was changed from oil to pellets for the sake of environmental protection.
The cost estimate of the whole expansion is EUR 9.3 million. Finavia's share of this cost is about half. The northern East Bothnia employment and economic development centre and European Regional Development Fund (EBRD) paid approximately 40 per cent of the cost of the project. The City of Kuusamo and the surrounding municipalities paid about ten per cent.
